29 January to be commemorated at GTGB
The event commemorating the events of 29 January, the symbol of the National Resistance of the Western Thrace Turks, is organised by the Advisory Board of the Turkish Minority of Western Thrace as every year.
In the announcement published by BTTADK this year, it was reported that the 29 January commemoration programme will be held on Monday 29 January at 18:30 at the Komotini Turkish Youth Union.
29 January In the commemoration programme, Journalist Hülya Emin, ITB President Ozan Ahmetoğlu and Psychologist Koray Bağdatlı will take part as speakers.
It was stated that all our people were invited to the event.
29 January resistance in Western Thrace
In Western Thrace, the Turkish minority had organised a big march in Komotini on 29 January 1988, which was called the mass resistance, upon the court decision to close down the associations with the word "Turkish" in their names on the grounds that there were no Turks in Greece.
On 29 January 1990, the second anniversary of these reactions, fanatic Greek groups organised mass attacks against Turks in Komotini and Xanthi.
During the attacks, which lasted for two days with the permission of the Greek police, more than 500 shops and workplaces belonging to Turks were destroyed and looted, and many Turks, including the late Mufti of Xanthi Mehmet Emin Aga and the then Independent MP Ahmet Faikoğlu, were beaten.
The Turkish minority in Western Thrace organises "commemoration" events every year on 29 January.
