Papandreou sends well-wishes to Kuşadası Mayor Günel following Wildfire disaster
Former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou has sent a letter of support to Kuşadası Mayor Ömer Günel in light of the recent wildfire disaster in Türkiye. In his message, Papandreou expressed his solidarity with those affected by the fires, stating, "I want to express my solidarity with all those impacted by the fire. In times like these, we realize that our countries are connected by more than just the sea; we share a deep bond due to the common challenges we face."
Papandreou, who is also the founder of the Symi Symposium, emphasized his understanding of the pain and fear experienced by the people of Kuşadası, noting similar tragedies that have occurred in Greece. He highlighted the importance of unity and cooperation in the face of climate change, which knows no borders. "As neighbors and friends, we must support each other against these threats and protect our shared future. Please know that you have our full support," he wrote.
In response, Mayor Ömer Günel thanked Papandreou for his thoughtful letter, referencing the recent Symi Symposium held on Samos Island, where he was an invited participant. He praised the event's focus on "Reimagining Power for Peace, Equality, and Sustainability," noting that Papandreou's letter echoed these themes and demonstrated sincere cooperation.
Mayor Günel added, "I wholeheartedly agree with your thoughts on the need for continuous cooperation to protect our forests, which are among the most precious resources on Earth. The blue and green colors reflect the beauty of our world, but they are under threat due to increasing pollution in our seas and the reckless behaviors that lead to forest fires. As the Mayor of Kuşadası, I thank you for your genuine offer of cooperation and assure you that we would be happy to seek your assistance when needed and to work together to prevent such disasters in the future."
