Jordan’s 1998 finals jersey sells for $14 million

A jersey worn by basketball legend Michael Jordan during the 1998 NBA Finals has sold for $14 million in a private sale, setting a record for basketball memorabilia, according to auction house Hunt Auctions.

Jordan wore the Chicago Bulls’ red jersey during Game 2 of the finals against the Utah Jazz, helping his team secure a victory that levelled the series at 1-1. Chicago went on to win the series in six games, earning Jordan his sixth and final NBA championship.

The jersey was purchased by Ron Firman, a Miami-based real estate investor, according to The Guardian.

“Michael Jordan’s importance within the sports memorabilia marketplace has long been established,” said Hunt Auctions President David Hunt, describing the market as an “elite asset class” comparable to iconic works of art.

Jordan memorabilia attracts record prices

The $14 million sale ranks as the second-highest known price paid for a game-worn sports jersey, behind the $24.12 million fetched by a Babe Ruth jersey worn during the 1932 World Series in 2024.

Jordan’s memorabilia from the 1998 Finals has attracted strong demand. A jersey he wore during Game 1 sold for approximately $10.1 million in 2022, while another worn in Game 3 fetched around $12.3 million at auction last month.

The 1997-98 season was documented in the acclaimed series “The Last Dance”, which chronicled Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ final championship run. The series became a global hit after its release on Netflix in 2020.
