Goalless finale for Greece in last world cup qualifier

Greece closed out a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign on Tuesday with a 0–0 draw against Belarus in a match held behind closed doors in Zalaegerszeg, Hungary.

Played in harsh, cold conditions, the match offered little consolation for Ivan Jovanovic’s side, whose lackluster performance capped off an overall underwhelming run in the qualifiers.

The opening half produced few notable moments, with the best opportunity falling to Giorgos Masouras. The Greek forward failed to convert from close range, striking the woodwork and missing a key chance to put his team ahead.

Greece showed greater intensity after the break, enjoying a promising 15-minute spell marked by sharper passing and increased pressure. However, a series of substitutions disrupted the team’s rhythm, and the momentum faded.

Christos Tzolis came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 77th minute, but his curling right-footed effort rebounded off the upright, leaving the match scoreless.

The fixture also marked the national team debut of 24-year-old Greek-Australian midfielder Nectarios Triadis.

Greece finishes the group stage in third place with seven points from six matches.

The national team will not return to competitive action until September 2026 in the next edition of the UEFA Nations League.
