GAS Komotini Women’s Basketball team earns promotion to Greece’s B National League
The women’s basketball team of GAS Komotini celebrated a historic achievement after winning the EKASAMATH regional championship, securing promotion to Greece’s B National League following a 62–47 victory over Olympiada Alexandroupolis in the finals series.
The win gave GAS Komotini a 3–1 lead in the championship series, sealing the title and confirming the team’s promotion. Coached by Fotis Zantzas, the team will compete in the newly structured B National division beginning with the 2026–2027 season.
The decisive game was closely contested, continuing the pattern seen throughout the rivalry between the two teams this season. Until the 35th minute, the score difference remained at just five points, reflecting the intense competition on the court.
However, a series of mistakes by the visiting side, combined with effective offensive choices from GAS Komotini’s players, allowed the home team to extend their lead in the final minutes and secure the victory by 15 points.
The result marked the largest margin of victory between the two teams this season. In their previous five meetings — during both the regular season and the finals — the games were decided by narrow margins of five to seven points, often coming down to the final possessions. This highlighted the strong competitiveness of Olympiada Alexandroupolis throughout the season.
Olympiada Alexandroupolis will now await confirmation of which teams will register to participate in the B National League, as there remains a possibility the club could also earn a place in the division.
