Judicial authorities have reportedly filed criminal charges against the president and four senior officials of Olympiakos soccer club in connection with a major case involving 167 defendants accused of being part of a criminal organization in Greek soccer.

The activities of this organization have also been linked to the death of a police officer late last year.

The officer, 31-year-old Giorgos Lyngeridis, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital 20 days after being struck by a flare during an attack on riot police outside a volleyball stadium in Rentis, near Piraeus, on December 7, 2023.

Charges have reportedly been filed against Olympiakos President Evangelos Marinakis and vice presidents Yiannis Moralis (who is also the mayor of Piraeus), Kostas Karapapas, Dimitris Agrafiotis, and Michalis Kountouris.

According to reports, the charges are misdemeanors and relate to supporting and financing a criminal organization, as well as inciting sports-related violence. The five defendants have been summoned to appear before the examining magistrate handling the case next Tuesday but are entitled to request a postponement to prepare their defense.

The charges were filed following an order from the magistrate overseeing the case, which has already led to the pre-trial detention of dozens of defendants, including prominent members of Gate 7, Olympiakos’ largest fan club, in April.
