Wildfire rages for second day on Chios, evacuations ordered

A large wildfire continued to burn out of control for a second day on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, prompting Greek authorities to order the evacuation of two more settlements early Monday as emergency services intensified efforts to contain the blaze.

According to AMNA and Kathimerini, over 190 firefighters, including 11 ground teams, were battling the fire across three separate fronts. Additional firefighting personnel from Athens and Thessaloniki were transported by ship to support the operation. At dawn, aerial support resumed with four water-dropping aircraft, and more reinforcements were expected throughout the day.

The settlements of Resta and Agia Paraskevi in the Karyes area were evacuated at 6 a.m. on Monday, adding to the 17 communities that were cleared on Sunday as the fire rapidly spread. Strong winds have significantly complicated containment efforts.

Authorities say the fire began with three separate outbreaks near the town of Chios on Sunday morning and midday, eventually merging into a massive blaze. An arson investigation unit has been dispatched to the island.

Local media shared dramatic images and footage showing firefighters battling towering flames engulfing forests and farmland.

Wildfires are a recurring threat in Greece during the dry summer months, but officials warn that climate change is contributing to more intense and frequent fires. The country still bears scars from the 2018 Mati tragedy, where over 100 people lost their lives.
