State hospital doctors will go on strike from noon to 3 pm Wednesday to protest work conditions for resident doctors.
The umbrella OENGE union is also planning a protest in Athens outside the Ministry of Health at 1:30 pm.
An OENGE statement said resident doctors – medical school graduates doing specialized training in hospitals – are overworked, underpaid and exploited.
“This sharply increases the danger of medical errors,” OENGE said. “In Greece resident doctors work on average 72 hours a week, while they get no more than four or five rest days a month.” It added that resident doctors get paid €5.38 an hour, less than in 2012 before the financial crisis clawed deep into health sector pay.
OENGE also called for the government to restore exemption from military service for resident doctors until the age of 33.
