Restoration of Atatürk house: Minister Ersoy inspects the work

Türkiye’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, visited Thessaloniki to inspect the ongoing restoration efforts at the Atatürk House, aiming to return the structure to its original 1953 appearance.

During his visit, Minister Ersoy met with the restoration team to review the project's details and progress. He emphasized that previous restoration efforts had strayed from the building's authentic character, and this project seeks to restore its original features. The restoration includes replacing all wooden components on the interior and exterior and completely renewing the electrical and plumbing systems.

Authenticity and New Museum Additions
Minister Ersoy highlighted that authentic materials are being used in the restoration. Additionally, the upper floor will house a museum featuring period-specific clothing and personal items of Atatürk, brought from Ankara’s inventory.

Library Enrichment and Visitor Numbers
The library at the Atatürk House will be enhanced with support from the Turkish Historical Society. Minister Ersoy noted that in 2023, the site welcomed approximately 500,000 Turkish visitors.

Planned Reopening in September 2024
The restoration is expected to be completed by September 2024. Minister Ersoy stated that reopening the Atatürk House will further enhance the cultural significance of the region.

Tourism Joint Commission Meeting
Following his visit to Thessaloniki, Minister Ersoy will attend a Tourism Joint Commission Meeting in Athens. Accompanying him were Turkey’s Ambassador to Athens, Çağatay Erciyes, and Consul General in Thessaloniki, Serkan Gedik.

The restoration of the Atatürk House is considered a critical step in preserving cultural heritage and passing it on to future generations.
