Police officer takes own life at Athens police department

A 36-year-old police officer tragically died by suicide on Sunday morning while on duty at the Criminal Investigation Department in Athens. 

The officer, a father of one, had just begun his shift and was found with a fatal gunshot wound caused by his service weapon.

Colleagues described him as composed and professional, with no visible signs of distress. 

Early forensic findings confirmed there was no indication of foul play, pointing to a clear case of suicide.

Authorities are now investigating possible personal factors behind the incident. 

An internal review is underway, and an official statement from the Ministry for Citizen Protection is expected.
