New police IDs can now be issued by any police station, regardless of citizen residence
Greek citizens may apply for and receive an updated or new-type police identity card at any police station or directorate regardless of their residence, the Citizen Protection Ministry said on Wednesday, following an updated decision by Minister Michalis Chryssochoidis.
The expanded options aim to serve citizens faster and more directly, as well as to fight bureaucracy.
Citizens can schedule online an appointment at the police station through the platform id.gov.gr, and by using their Taxisnet user name and password. The service verifies the appointment by email. For the new IDs, police will draw data automatically from the Citizens Registry and the National Communication Registry. An appointment may be cancelled up to 1 hour before scheduled time, while the service also provides reminders of the date. Parents may also follow the same process for police IDs for their children, which must be over 12 years old to get an ID.
Particularly for cases of lost or stolen IDs, citizens should call or email the issuing authority directly and ask for an appointment for a new one.
Besides police stations and departments, one may also apply for a new-type ID through branches of the Citizens Service Center (KEP). This does not apply to exceptional cases such as loss, theft, worn-out IDs, and so on.
