Greek police have arrested a 30-year-old foreign national accused of defrauding a woman of nearly €900,000 in cash and jewellery by posing as an accountant. Authorities are still searching for his 41-year-old accomplice.

According to the Hellenic Police, the incident took place on July 9, when the 30-year-old, with the help of the second suspect, contacted the victim by phone, pretending to be her accountant. Claiming that there were serious errors in her tax return, he pressured her to hand over money in order to "resolve the issue."

The woman initially gave him €7,000 in cash and jewellery worth €10,000.

According to AMNA the next day, the same individual contacted her again, insisting that further payment was needed to settle the alleged mistake. The woman proceeded to visit two different bank branches, where she withdrew and handed over €45,700 in cash and additional jewellery valued at €800,000.

Realizing she had been deceived, the victim reported the case to the Department of Investigation and Detection of Crimes of Filothei–Psychiko.

Following an investigation, officers identified the 30-year-old suspect and arrested him on July 16 in the Agia Varvara area of Athens. He was brought before the public prosecutor.

The second suspect, a 41-year-old man, remains at large. Authorities have issued a warrant for his arrest, and the investigation is ongoing.
