Kikilias says drivers must 'have snowchains and know how to use them'

Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vasilis Kikilias urged motorists travelling to rural areas for Christmas to exercise caution ahead of the bad weather forecast by meteorologists.

Speaking in an interview on Open Television, he noted that drivers must ensure both that their vehicles have snow chains and that they know how to put them on and use them.

"Unfortunately, it is not self-evident that we have snow chains in the car and, when we do, it is not self-evident that we know how to fit them onto our wheels if the need arises," he said.

Noting that occupancy rates in Greece's winter destinations were high, the minister said that he wanted the holidays to be enjoyed with safety and without problems. "If there is a section of the road at high altitudes where it has snowed and a car does not have snowchains or a heavy vehicle fishtails, it will cause problems for many kilometres. It is nice to go on a family outing with our friends but we must be equipped with all these things, especially during this period," he said.
