Interior Ministry allocating 11.25 million euros to address water shortages in municipalities
Funding totaling 11,250,000 euros to address water shortages is allocated by the Interior Ministry to municipalities and to Municipal Water Supply and Sewarage Enterprises (DEYA), it was announced on Tuesday.
Interior Minister Thodoris Livanios signed an invitation for proposals which aim to improve management of water resources and infrastructures providing drinkable water.
The funding is earmarked specifically for two types of action: new drilling for water or the upgrade of existing wells, and the use of desalinated water through rental of desalination systems. Each applicant may only submit one proposal, not exceeding a budget of 150,000 euros.
Exempted from this funding are the municipalities of the Regions of the Ionian Islands, North Aegean, and South Aegean, which will be funded by a similar action of the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy.
According to an online Interior Ministry description, DEYAs are municipal enterprises of special purpose, operating as private businesses. They are self-funded, and do not burden the state budget.
