Edirne Governor Yunus Sezer stated that there is an increase in migrant traffic with the arrival of summer months and said that they prevented 8 thousand 467 people from leaving Türkiye illegally in the first five months.

Governor of Edirne Yunus Sezer told the press members at the Governorate Meeting Hall about the measures taken in the fight against illegal migration and terrorism.

Emphasising that the police and gendarmerie teams are working intensively at the point of migrant smuggling, Governor Sezer said that they have achieved good results in catch rates for this reason.

Explaining that they have taken various measures to combat illegal crossings, Sezer continued his words as follows:

"We have 106 enforcement points in our province, 16 of them are fixed. The others are the points we change according to the situation. We carry out 75 per cent of our apprehensions with measures taken before coming to the border line. Our gendarmes and border troops are in the field 24 hours a day, they work sacrificially. This year, we caught 8 thousand 467 irregular migrants. 3 thousand 21 people were caught only in May. There is a 7 per cent increase compared to May last year."

Governor Sezer said that they are also waging an extraordinary struggle against human traffickers.

Stating that 274 people smugglers were caught in 5 months of this year, Governor Sezer said that 238 vehicles used in the offence were seized.

Governor Sezer added that during the same period, 210 members of the terrorist organisation trying to flee abroad were captured and brought to justice.
