Human rights organization dissolves itself due to pressure from Athens
Mare Liberum, who works on asylum seekers on the maritime border between Türkiye and Greece in the Aegean Sea, dissolved herself. The organization cited Athens' oppressive attitude as the reason for its decision.
The organization, which stated that it ended its activities as of May 1, cited "the increasing pressure of the local security forces on the Greek island of Lesbos" and "the laws made by the right-wing conservative Greek government that made it impossible to monitor the attitude of the border authorities towards refugees".
Mare Liberum, which started its activities in 2018, was working on the Türkiye-Greece maritime border, which is also the EU border, with a ship bearing the name of the organization to monitor the situation of asylum seekers trying to cross the Aegean Sea.
