Greece to launch FREE Preventive Tests for obesity and kidney disease, says Alternate Health Minister

Greece will soon expand its national preventive health program, "Prolamvano", to include two new sets of free medical check-ups—one targeting adult obesity and the other focusing on early detection of kidney dysfunction. The announcement was made by Alternate Health Minister Eirini Agapidaki during an interview with ANT1 on Friday.

According to Agapidaki, individuals who have already undergone cardiovascular screening and have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 37 will receive a text message with an electronic prescription for a free consultation. This appointment will be with an endocrinologist or, if none is available locally, a general practitioner or internist.

These patients will gain access to a range of diagnostic tests and new obesity treatments, which are otherwise expensive. “Given that obesity is often linked to low-income households, as data shows, the government will fully cover the cost,” Agapidaki explained. She also emphasized that personalized nutritional counseling will be mandatory to help ensure successful outcomes.

The program will also target kidney health. Citizens already diagnosed with high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart conditions—groups at higher risk of kidney problems—will be notified via SMS to undergo preventive screening. “Early detection is crucial,” the minister noted. “If left unchecked, kidney dysfunction can progress to renal failure.”

Agapidaki also expressed pride in recent international recognition of Greece’s public health efforts. The country was honored by both the United Nations and the World Health Organization for its strategies to prevent chronic diseases and combat childhood obesity.

“From having virtually no preventive policies for decades, we’ve made rapid progress,” she said. “Now, Greece is in a position to serve as a model for other countries.”
