Greece is among the first five European Union member states selected to pilot a new age-verification system aimed at protecting minors from harmful content online, the European Commission announced on Monday.

The initiative is part of the broader Digital Services Act (DSA) framework, which seeks to create a safer digital environment across the EU. The age-verification prototype, developed by the Commission, is designed to confirm whether users are over the age of 18 without compromising their privacy or exposing personal data.

In addition to Greece, Denmark, Spain, France, and Italy will participate in the initial testing phase. The five countries will work alongside the Commission to adapt the app for national implementation, with the aim of setting a standard for future digital identity tools.

According to the Commission, the verification system—also referred to as the "mini-wallet"—uses open-source technology and aligns with the technical specifications of the upcoming European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW), expected to roll out by the end of 2026.

“The blueprint provides a method for users to prove they are over 18 when accessing restricted content, such as online pornography, without revealing other personal details,” the Commission noted in a statement.

Officials say the app will not only help block underage access to adult content but also pave the way for broader age-appropriate services across digital platforms in Europe.

The initiative reflects the EU’s growing emphasis on online child protection, data privacy, and digital identity security, as part of its digital transformation agenda.
