FM Gerapetritis: Full safety ensured for Greeks on the Flotilla

Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis, speaking on Thursday at the 11th International Conference of Maritime Law on “ Maritime Risks, Revisited”, emphasised that Greece has made representations to the Israeli side, both proactively and again today, to fully ensure the safety of Greek citizens on board the ships of the Global Sumud Flotilla.

Gerapetritis stated that, according to the information available at the time of his speech, the 39 ships of the flotilla are already sailing toward the port of Ashdod. “ All those on board are in good health, and no violence has occurred. The circumstances under which the ships were escorted to Israel have not yet been fully clarified. What is certain is that, in cooperation with the other countries whose citizens are part of the mission, we will do everything in our power to guarantee their safety-and we have already taken steps to this end,” he said.

Referring to the theme of the conference, the minister noted that 80% of global trade volume is transported by sea. He underlined that the supply chain, which depends almost entirely on maritime routes, compels all states to take a strong interest in maritime security. He cited Egypt’s economy as an example, pointing to a more than 60% drop in Suez Canal transits due to recent events in the Red Sea, which has significantly reduced revenues.

Gerapetritis also referred to emerging maritime threats, including hybrid threats and risks to subsea infrastructure.
