Deputy Civil Protection Minister Christos Triantopoulos is expected to tender his resignation to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday, as pressure mounts on the center-right government over its handling of the 2023 Tempe rail disaster.

The move comes as a parliamentary committee is set to convene to examine the issue and after the PASOK socialist opposition demanded that an inquiry also be conducted into Triantopoulos’ actions at the time of the deadly collision.

As deputy minister to the prime minister at the time, Triantopoulos has been accused by victims’ families of allegedly tampering with evidence relating to the collision between two trains by ordering the clearing and landfilling of the accident site before a proper investigation into the causes could be conducted.
