The Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy has announced that it welcomes the interest of U.S.-based energy giant Chevron in exploring for hydrocarbons south of Crete.

According to a statement from the ministry, Chevron has expressed its intention to conduct hydrocarbon exploration in the region.

The ministry has reportedly responded positively to Chevron’s request concerning two so-called blocks in the area.

The statement further noted that the ministry will define the exact region, determine the type of contract to be signed, and decide on launching an international tender process. It was also mentioned that Chevron had previously expressed interest in working south of the Peloponnese Peninsula.
