Vera Çelik, 20, has become the first headscarf-wearing member elected to the Zurich City Council after winning a seat in District 11 on the Social Democratic Party (SP) list.

Speaking to AA after the election, Çelik said she felt both excited and proud to be chosen by voters at such a young age. She stressed that Zurich’s diverse society should be reflected in its political institutions and welcomed the election of other representatives from minority backgrounds.

Çelik noted that prejudice against Muslims still exists in Switzerland and said visibility in politics is important to challenge discrimination. She added that her new role would allow her to continue advocating for minority rights and the protection of Muslim communities.

The 20-year-old politician said she aims to serve the city over the next four years and contribute to building an inclusive, anti-racist society. As the youngest member of the council, she is also expected to deliver the opening speech of the new parliamentary term in May.

Çelik encouraged young people, especially those from immigrant backgrounds, to participate in politics, saying determination and courage can open the door to representation.
