Violence against women, racism, and xenophobia on the rise in Europe

The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) released its annual report highlighting ongoing serious threats to fundamental rights across Europe. According to the report, violence against women, mistreatment of migrants, and racism remain widespread in EU countries.

The report states that harsh measures against migrants continued in some European countries throughout 2024, with over 3,500 people losing their lives or going missing while attempting to reach EU countries by sea.

Significant increases in hate crimes and physical attacks targeting Muslims, Jews, and Black people were also noted. Discrimination and racism have become prevalent in many member states.

Violence Against Women: One in Three Victims

The report reveals that one in three women in Europe has experienced gender-based violence. It calls for specialized training for police, healthcare workers, and all relevant professionals to help address this issue.

Artificial Intelligence and Disinformation Threaten Elections

FRA also warned that the rise of artificial intelligence and widespread disinformation pose risks to free and fair elections in Europe.

FRA Director Sirpa Rautio stated, “Europe faces serious threats to fundamental rights. This report serves as a wake-up call for EU countries. Decisive steps must be taken to place fundamental rights at the core of all EU policies.”
