The Hellenic Consumers’ Association is marking European Car-Free Day on September 22 by encouraging citizens to leave their cars at home and use public transportation instead.
September 22 – European car-free day

Car-Free Day is an opportunity to reflect on the environmental impact of car use and to promote alternative means of transport — more sustainable and healthier for both people and cities.

According to data from ELSTAT, in 2024 there were 6,027,946 cars registered in Greece (of which 5,994,386 were private vehicles) and 1,851,620 motorcycles (1,841,304 for passenger use). The high volume of vehicles, especially in urban centers, has serious consequences: traffic congestion, air and noise pollution, limited accessibility on roads and sidewalks, and reduced quality of life.

For a more eco-friendly and economical way of moving around, the Association suggests:

  • Choosing public transport for daily commutes
  • Using apps and websites to stay informed about timetables
  • Carpooling with colleagues or friends
  • Embracing cycling and walking for short distances

European Car-Free Day is not only a symbolic reminder but also an encouragement to adopt these practices throughout the year. Choosing buses, trains, bicycles, or walking more often can reduce expenses, while improving both physical and mental health.

“Let’s make a sustainable city for everyone and invest in our health — for ourselves and our children,” the Association urges.
