Italy accused of spying on pro-migrant NGO operating in Mediterranean

‘Anyone who works to save lives, to help women, men and children imprisoned in concentration camps or abandoned in the middle of the sea, for this government is a danger to national security,’ says Mediterranea Saving Humans.

A pro-migrant NGO operating in the Mediterranean accused Italy of spying on the organization.

Mediterranea Saving Humans said Wednesday that a survey was conducted via Paragon Graphite spyware, after a request by the government and authorized by the attorney general at an appeals court in Rome.

Maintaining that the surveillance was legal but illegitimate, Mediterranea Saving Humans said: “Anyone who works to save lives, to help women, men, and children imprisoned in concentration camps or abandoned in the middle of the sea, for this government, is a danger to national security.”

It emphasized that it would not give up and continue operations for “a world where the Mediterranean is no longer a horrible mass grave but a sea of peace and solidarity between the peoples who inhabit.”
