Germany’s Free Voters leader Hubert Aiwanger found dead in Berlin hotel
Hubert Aiwanger, leader of Germany’s Free Voters party and Bavaria’s deputy premier and economy minister, has been found dead in a Berlin hotel, according to German media reports.
The 55-year-old was discovered at the Neuer Fritz hotel in Berlin-Mitte on Wednesday after failing to attend the opening of his party’s new office in the capital. He had reportedly missed the event for health reasons.
German newspaper Bild reported that sources in the Bavarian state government and Berlin police had confirmed his death. Tagesspiegel, citing police sources, reported that there were no indications of external involvement and that health-related causes were suspected.
Longstanding role in Bavarian politics
Aiwanger led the Free Voters in Bavaria from 2006 and became head of the party at federal level in 2010.
He entered the Bavarian state parliament in 2008. Following the 2018 regional election, he was appointed deputy premier and economy minister in the government led by Markus Söder of the Christian Social Union (CSU).
His death marks a significant development in Bavaria’s political leadership.
