WTMGA Women’s Branch organizes cultural trip to Filibe (Plovdiv)
The Women’s Branch of the Western Thrace Minority Higher Education Association (WTMGA) recently organized a meaningful cultural visit to Filibe (Plovdiv), Bulgaria’s 2019 European Capital of Culture, on June 14-15.
The trip aimed to strengthen cultural bonds and promote historical awareness among the Turkish minority community.
The delegation began their visit with a courtesy call to the Turkish Consulate in Filibe (Plovdiv), where Consul General Korhan Küngerü warmly welcomed the group.
WTMGA Women’s Branch Chairperson Sevtap Hint, General Secretary Doğa Kasap, board members, and the theater coordinator Senemahu Topuz attended the meeting. During the gathering, Consul General Küngerü shared insights into Plovdiv’s rich history and its cultural mosaic.
Guided tours followed, taking participants through key landmarks such as the Ethnographic Museum, the Friday Mosque, Plovdiv Old Town, the Roman Ancient Theatre, Kapana Art District, Tsar Simeon Park, the Roman Forum, Hisar Gate, Nebet Hill, and the Sahabettin Imaret Mosque.
These visits offered the delegation a deep dive into the city’s multi-layered heritage and the enduring presence of Turkish culture in the region.
Organized under the leadership of Sevtap Hint, with active contributions from board members Doğa Kasap, Neşe Ahmet, Zeynep Karahoca, Züleyha Ahmet, and Hedef Mustafaoğlu, the trip was both an educational journey and a celebration of shared history.
The cultural trip reflects the ongoing commitment of the Western Thrace Turkish community, especially its women, to preserving their heritage and fostering solidarity with Turkic communities across the Balkans.
