Neither Life nor Death are cheap in BiH

”Everything can fail, disappear, only death is a sure thing”, is the famous line from the cult Serbian movie ”The Marathon Family”, uttered by the great Danilo Bata Stojkovic in the role of Laki.

In addition to having to worry about how to survive/live, many citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) are also forced to think about how much the costs of their death will cost.

Considering that the average net salary in the Federation of BiH (FBiH) last month was around 1.139 BAM, and the price of the consumer basket was 2.986 BAM, the question arises as to how to allocate money for ”last expenses”.

The prices differ from the grave site and burial location to the religious ceremony chosen by the family of the deceased.

If we take into account that the wave of price increases has affected every pore of our society, it is interesting that the prices of funeral services have not increased recently.

”The prices of our services have been unchanged for years. Thus, the annual burial site fee still costs 8.50 BAM. If the deceased person does not have a reserved burial place, the burial is carried out exclusively at the Vlakovo cemetery and the price is 4.680 BAM regardless of religious affiliation, and with a reservation, the price is incomparably lower and amounts to 1.170 BAM. Both prices include VAT,” the Cantonal public utility company ”Pokop” d.o.o. confirmed.

The difference in prices according to religious ceremonies

”The religious part of the burial is not included in the costs. Funeral homes ”Bakije” and ”Jedileri” are mainly in charge of Muslims. Catholics arrange the burial details with the Parish Office, while Orthodox believers arrange the details with the religious person in their municipality of residence,” the company added.

”Jedileri,” said that the complete equipment for the funeral, which includes the coffin, burial, transport of the deceased, and others costs about 640 BAM if the deceased was not a member of them. This service is free for ”Jedileri” members, Klix.ba reports.
