In a written statement, Kosovo Mufti Naim Tërnava expressed deep sorrow and outrage, characterizing the burning and desecration of the Quran as an act of “vandalism and criminality.” He stated that the incident was allegedly carried out by unidentified individuals “on commission and with a clear criminal mission.”

“Such an act is entirely unacceptable, as it gravely undermines the universal human values of world civilization and constitutes a direct attack on the principles, traditions, and identity of our people,” Tërnava said.

Recalling that the Albanian people have historically been known for interfaith harmony, coexistence, and mutual understanding, Tërnava described the incident in Gjakova as “a concrete and alarming act resulting directly from anti-Albanian and anti-Islamic ideologies.” He warned that these ideologies aim to implement malicious agendas inspired by historically hostile approaches toward Albanians of Islamic faith.

The Kosovo Mufti also called on state institutions to take immediate legal action not only against the perpetrators, but also against the instigators, ideological architects, and organizers behind the act. He emphasized that such groups often hide behind false slogans such as “freedom of expression,” “freedom of belief,” or distorted interpretations of Albanian identity to justify hostility and provocation.

According to reports, the incident occurred in the Çabrat neighborhood of Gjakova.

The Kosovo Police announced that an investigation has been launched to clarify all aspects of the case, noting that neither the perpetrators nor their motives have yet been identified.

Gjakova Police spokesperson Vlera Krasniqi confirmed that the special prosecution has been informed and that all necessary procedures are underway.
