Greece Talks: Aegean to add Thessaloniki-Izmir flights this year, CEO says

Aegean is "at bureaucratic processing" stage to inaugurate twice-weekly flights between Thessaloniki and Izmir this year, airline CEO Dimitris Gerogiannis told the 4th innovation conference 'Greece Talks', jointly organized by Travel.gr and 'Proto Thema' newspaper in Thessaloniki on Wednesday.
Speaking at the conference segment on 'Tourism develops in developing cities',Gerogiannis said that "Izmir is a destination being discussed for a while now, and comprises a destination connected to Thessaloniki at traditional, cultural, and historical level."
Referring to domestic flights of Aegean from Thessaloniki International Airport 'Makedonia', the CEO said these show a 30% rise, while the airline connects the northern city with 8 or 9 islands, including, as of this year, Syros.
"We believed in Thessaloniki when nobody took notice of it, and I believe we contributed to the city's development in a very consistent way," Gerogiannis underlined. He added, "In 2019, we flew from Thessaloniki to 9 or 10 destinations abroad, which today number 20. As of this year (2025), and in the spirit of investing in the city, Aegean will increase the number of seats in the network abroad by 7%, "and we believe and hope that the number of passengers we will transport will reach 3 million people."
A fleet of 8 aircraft are permanently stationed at 'Makedonia' and the airline staff there numbers 300, Georgiannis said. He also noted that the number of passengers flying with Aegean in Thessaloniki rose 6% in 2024, a very positive trend that makes the destination a reliable and sustainable one when combined with infrastructure and other investments taking place in the city.
