It was announced that the fire that has been going on in Alexandroupoli and Evros Region since 19 August is the biggest forest fire Greece has faced in the last 20 years.

According to the report prepared by the Greek Meteorological Office based on the data of the Copernicus Emergency Management Agency of the European Union (EU), the forest area burned in Alexandroupoli and Evros Region until 23 August exceeded 720 thousand acres.

In the 16 largest fires in Greece in the last 20 years, a total area of 4 million 200 thousand acres was burnt. Among these, the fire covering the largest area was in Alexandroupoli and Evros with 720 thousand acres.

This fire was included in the report as the largest fire recorded in European territory in recent years.

In Greece, where 520 thousand acres of land burnt in July, over 1 million 200 thousand acres were burnt this year.
