The Bulgarian government has approved a proposal to supply water from the Arda River to Greece for irrigation purposes under a five-year agreement.
A draft joint declaration on the use of the Arda River confirms that both parties recognize Bulgaria’s prior commitment — based on a 1964 agreement — to provide water to Greece, and that this obligation was fulfilled on July 9, 2024.
The Greek government has declared its intention to begin the modernization of existing reservoirs (dams) or to construct new balancing facilities within a reasonable timeframe, aiming to enhance irrigation capacity on Greek territory.
The draft document also states that the Greek government will take the necessary steps to reimburse Bulgaria for the services related to the collection, storage, and regulated supply of water volumes from the Arda River.
