Bulgaria approves new border crossing with Türkiye near Kapıkule

The Bulgarian government has approved plans to open a new customs and border crossing with Türkiye alongside the busy Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule gate, aiming to ease congestion and resolve longstanding transit problems between the two countries.

In a statement issued after a regular cabinet meeting, the government said it had endorsed a draft agreement with Türkiye for the opening of a new crossing point, to be called “Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule North.”

According to AA, under the draft agreement, a joint commission made up of representatives from both countries will determine the technical parameters of the new crossing, which will be located north of the existing Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule border gate.

The commission is expected to assess road connections, route locations, intersection points with the border line, the number of crossing lanes, the placement and technical features of the new border control facilities, operating arrangements, infrastructure, and the types of cargo and passengers to be handled, as well as construction-related issues.

Kapitan Andreevo–Kapıkule is considered one of the world’s busiest border crossings and is widely described as Europe’s largest land border gate, serving as a key link between the European Union and Asia.
