32nd International Hıdırellez Spring Festival celebrated with enthusiasm in North Macedonia

This traditional event, which is listed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list, began with the recital of the Independence March and the North Macedonian national anthem.
The festival was attended by important figures, including Türkiye’s Ambassador to Skopje, Fatih Ulusoy, former President of North Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, Valandova Mayor Pero Kostadinov, and Deputy President of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), Mahmut Çevik, among others. Additionally, representatives from Turkish and local organizations, along with the local community, participated in the festivities.
Ambassador Ulusoy’s Message
Ambassador Ulusoy conveyed the greetings of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the participants and expressed his gratitude to everyone involved in organizing the festival. He emphasized the importance of celebrating spring with joy and highlighted the significance of ethnic communities in North Macedonia preserving this tradition. Ulusoy also pointed out that the Turkish community in North Macedonia plays a key role in strengthening relations in the region, stating, “The Turkish people have made significant contributions to the rich cultural heritage of this region.”
TİKA’s Support and Future Vision
TİKA’s Deputy President Mahmut Çevik mentioned that the festival contributes to identity and solidarity and assured that they would continue to offer support in the future.
Representing Local Culture
Mayor Kostadinov emphasized that the event, which showcases the local culture and traditions, contributes to strengthening the friendship between Turks and Macedonians. He expressed his happiness that Hıdırellez has now been recognized by UNESCO as an official festival.
Activities and Participants
The festival featured popular events such as folk dance performances and oil wrestling competitions, which were met with great interest. Plaques were awarded to individuals and institutions who contributed to the event, and a gallery was held at the village school.
Duration and Significance of the Festival
The festival, supported by TİKA and Halkbank Skopje, will conclude on May 7th. Hıdırellez Spring Festival was included in UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2017 through the collaboration between Turkey and North Macedonia.
