YPG announces dissolution and integration into Syrian army
The YPG announced Tuesday that it had dissolved its so-called autonomous administration and all of its military and civilian structures, following an agreement with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
Ferhat Abdi Sahin, a senior YPG figure who uses the code name Mazloum Abdi, announced the decision at a news conference at the People's Palace in Damascus.
He said the group was dissolving itself as an independent military force after completing the process of integrating its forces into brigades of the Syrian army.
“Following the agreement reached with President Ahmed al-Sharaa, and upon completion of the process of integrating our forces into the brigades of the Syrian army, we announce today, with a great sense of responsibility, that we are dissolving ourselves as an independent military force,” Sahin said.
Ceasefire deal paved way for integration
The Syrian administration and the YPG reached an agreement on Jan. 29 that included a ceasefire and called for the group's gradual integration into Syrian state institutions.
The latest announcement marks the declared completion of that integration process and the end of the group's separate military and civilian structures.
U.S. envoy welcomes decision
U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrack welcomed the announcement, describing it as an “absolutely historic” development and saying that “a united Syria for all takes shape.”
Barrack said U.S. President Donald Trump's Middle East policy and leadership had helped pave the way for the Syrian Democratic Forces' orderly integration into state institutions.
He said the move would transform past divisions into a lasting partnership and give Syrians an opportunity to shape their common future.
Barrack also welcomed provisions recognizing the Kurdish language in education and providing roles within the Syrian government for Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmed.
Focus shifts to a unified state
Barrack said the agreement represented genuine integration rather than a victory for one side over another, with former rivals reaching an arrangement designed to reinforce Syrian sovereignty.
“One army, one government, one state,” Barrack said.
The announcement comes as Damascus seeks to consolidate state authority and integrate previously autonomous armed and administrative structures into a unified national framework.
