Trump says he is disappointed with former Greece ambassador Guilfoyle

Possible congressional testimony and legal disputes put former envoy under scrutiny.

US President Donald Trump has expressed disappointment with former US ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle, while declining to say whether he would consider granting her a presidential pardon if she faced legal proceedings.

“I don’t even want to think about it,” Trump said in an interview with conservative television network Newsmax when asked about the possibility of a pardon.

The question followed reports suggesting Guilfoyle could face legal scrutiny over allegations involving potential conflicts of interest and abuse of power.

Trump said he had not spoken to Guilfoyle and had learned about the matter only through media reports.

“I read some things. I haven’t spoken to her,” he said, adding that she had been popular in Greece.

“She did a very good job as ambassador in Greece, so I’m disappointed,” Trump said, according to Greece’s public broadcaster ERT.

The president described the reports about the former ambassador as unfavourable but offered no further details about the allegations.

Possible congressional testimony

The controversy has also taken on a political dimension in Washington, with a Democratic-led committee reportedly considering calling Guilfoyle to testify following reports by The Wall Street Journal concerning possible conflicts of interest and abuse of power.

The allegations have not been established as proven wrongdoing, and further details about any potential proceedings remain unclear.

Guilfoyle is also involved in a separate dispute with US financier Eric Deters, who has threatened legal action and challenged her account of the matter.

The developments have opened two potential fronts for the former ambassador: possible congressional proceedings and a separate legal confrontation with Deters.

Trump recalls her marriage to California governor

During the interview, Trump also referred to Guilfoyle’s former marriage to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

He did not mention her relationship with his son, Donald Trump Jr., which lasted approximately six years.

The interview made no reference to their reported engagement or to her personal relationship with the Trump family.

Guilfoyle served as US ambassador to Greece before leaving the post. Trump’s comments mark a public expression of disappointment as questions surrounding the former envoy draw renewed attention in the United States.
