Canadian Muslim group condemns removal of Palestinian keffiyeh at graduation
The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) has condemned the apparent removal of a Palestinian keffiyeh from a graduating student during a high school commencement ceremony in Saskatoon, describing the incident as part of a broader pattern of anti-Palestinian racism.
The advocacy group shared a video of the incident on social media on Tuesday, saying a staff member at Centennial Collegiate appeared to remove the student's Palestinian keffiyeh scarf during the graduation ceremony.
"It has been extremely disturbing to witness the latest incident at Saskatoon's Centennial Collegiate, where a young graduate recently appeared to have had her Palestinian keffiyeh scarf ripped off by a staff member during her graduation ceremony," the NCCM said in a statement.
The organisation said the incident reflected growing discrimination faced by Palestinians in Canada, particularly in educational settings.
"We have seen so much anti-Palestinian racism in recent years, particularly on campuses and inside graduation ceremonies such as these, where any reference to Palestinian culture or identity is conflated with ideas of terrorism and violence," the NCCM said.
The group called attention to what it described as increasing hostility toward expressions of Palestinian identity in schools and universities.
