Yassıköy Municipality hosts information session on stray animal welfare

On Friday, May 30, the Municipality of Yassıköy held an informative session focused on the protection and management of stray animals. The event took place in the municipal council chamber and was attended by local authorities, experts, and animal welfare advocates.

The session was moderated by Yassıköy Mayor Caner Imam, who also delivered the opening remarks. Key participants included Nikolaos Hrisakis, Secretary General for Pet Protection at the Ministry of Interior, along with team members Irini Maggaki and Marinella Fruzaki.

The meeting reviewed the municipality’s initiatives concerning stray animals during the 2024–2025 period. Hrisakis provided updates on collaborative efforts with the municipality, including spaying and neutering campaigns, public awareness programs, and preventive measures.

Mayor Imam highlighted the challenges faced in past years and emphasized the current administration’s commitment to addressing these issues. He expressed gratitude to local police departments and animal welfare organizations for their support and cooperation.

In his speech, Secretary General Hrisakis underlined that one of the main causes of the growing stray animal population is the uncontrolled breeding of owned pets. He stressed the importance of sterilization and education as key solutions.

At the conclusion of the event, Hrisakis presented Mayor Imam with a commemorative plaque inscribed with the phrase: “We coexist with every form of life on Earth.”
