The Xanthi Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into the ITB march, which caused public reactions from the Turkish Minority.
In the statement made by the Xanthi Turkish Union, it was stated that "We would like to emphasize that our society sees the launch of an investigation 7 months after a democratic protest march as part of the attempts to suppress the struggle of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority against the usurpation of rights, against unlawfulness and injustice."
The statement made by the Xanthi Turkish Union is as follows:
“As the Xanthi Turkish Union, we would like to emphasize that we are disappointed with the opening of an investigation after 7 mounts into the democratic march we organized against injustice which has lasted for years and we express our deep concern about.
It is obvious that the investigation by the prosecutor's office about the march organized by the Xanthi Turkish Union on Saturday, July 10, 2021 has created a big surprise among the minority society.
We have learned with astonishment that an investigation was launched on the allegation that Xanthi Turkish Union President Ozan Ahmetoğlu, Xanthi and Komotini Mufti Mete and Şerif, and two minority mayors did not wear masks during their speeches during the march.
It was also stated that two mayoral candidates and 10 ITB members who were on the march were also included in the investigation.
Xanthi Turkish Union, which is the first of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority and one of the oldest non-governmental organizations in Western Thrace in general, has been fighting against injustice for 39 years and always continues its struggle within the framework of law.
An investigation was started 7 months after a democratic protest march, which was carried out by following the necessary legal procedure and without the slightest outburst or undesirable event.
We would like to emphasize that our society sees such attempts as part of attempts to suppress the struggle against the usurpation of rights, against unlawfulness and injustice by the Western Thrace Turkish Minority. While hundreds of marches and demonstrations were held both in our region and throughout Greece in the same period, we leave it to the discretion of the society to investigate the democratic action organized by the Xanthi Turkish Union months later.
We would like to remind you that; Xanthi Turkish Union organized a march to draw attention to the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights, which were not implemented for years. Xanthi Turkish Union organized a march demanding that the first non-governmental organization of the minority be restored to its legal status, taking into account the decisions of the ECHR.
The Xanthi Turkish Union organized a march to put an end to the injustice and lawlessness we have been subjected to for years in our country, Greece. Xanthi Turkish Union organized a march to end the treatment of our association and other associations of our minority as a "criminal organization" because the ECHR decisions were not implemented and the calls of the Council of Europe were not taken into account. Xanthi Turkish Union organized a march for democracy, respect for human rights and international law.
We would like to thank once again all our minority institutions and organizations, our leaders, our politicians and our compatriots who have supported our democratic action to make our voices heard, despite the various methods of intimidation and deterrence by some circles.
We call out to the authorized institutions, the managers of our country and the whole public and say that; The continuation of the injustice and injustice applied to the Xanthi Turkish Union by ignoring international law and ECHR decisions will continue to hurt the conscience of the Western Thrace Muslim Turkish Minority.
On this occasion, we would like to express once again that we expect all attempts, efforts and practices aimed at suppressing, deterring and curbing our democratic struggle, in the name of democracy and human rights.
Xanthi Turkish Union will continue its struggle for rights against injustice and injustice as it did for 39 years without losing any of its determination.
Our biggest supporters in this struggle are our belief in law and democracy, the conscience of our society and the support it gives to this struggle."
