Xanthi claims the reopening of the railway line Xanthi - Drama

An initiative for the tourism development of Xanthi was taken up by two productive bodies, specifically the OEBE Xanthi and the Xanthi Trade Association. In particular, the president of OEBE, Ms. Mary Tsiakiroglou, and the president of the Trade Association, Mr. Nikos Grigoriadis, had a meeting with the general secretary of Transport, Mr. Xifaras Ioannis, on Monday, October 3.

As stated in the newsletter, the main topic of discussion was the operation of the Xanthi-Drama railway line. Speaking to "E", Ms. Tsiakiroglou described it as "a major issue for the tourism development and promotion of the wider region" as, in addition to connecting Xanthi with Drama by rail, the route is enchanting and those who have done it in the past when it was operating she is unforgettable. It is about the Temples of Nestos that literally amaze the traveler with the natural beauty of the landscape and excursions could be organized just for this route and not be in disuse as it is today.

That is why the initiative of Ms. Tsiakiroglou and Mr. Grigoriadis is very important. It is recalled that the Trade Association raised the issue in the letter it sent to the Minister of Tourism.

Let the municipality and subregion of Xanthi claim it

The issue concerns the whole of Xanthi and the municipality and the sub-region of Xanthi as well as Drama must be activated, demanding that the Xanthi-Drama line be reopened for the benefit of both regional units. In fact, there was a meeting of the mayors of Xanthi and Parenesti where this issue was discussed. It should be noted that this line is not included in the contract signed in April 2022 by TRAINOSE with the public, which foresees that it will be subsidized with 50 million euros per year for the next 10 years, to run routes on the "barren lines" among which and the route Xanthi – Komotini Alexandroupoli. According to the contract, the operation of the Railway in the AMTH Region includes: a simple train will start from Thessaloniki and arrive in Drama daily, ki and there with a daily bus from Drama to Xanthi, thus "bypassing" the Nestos straits, as the condition of the line in the "Nestos straits" was not considered good. It will continue on the rest of the axis from Xanthi to Alexandroupoli. According to our information, this contract, which has remained inactive until now, is going to be activated soon.
