Xanthi champion in poverty, DMT Region runner-up
While East Macedonia and Thrace Region was the second poorest region in Greece, Xanthi is the poorest province of East Macedonia Thrace Region.
According to the data published by the State Statistical Institute (ELSTAT), East Macedonia Thrace Region was the second poorest region in Greece, while Xanthi was the poorest province of East Macedonia Thrace Region according to the same data.
According to the news published in the Kathimerini newspaper, it was stated that the national income per capita on a state basis in 2019 was 11,639 euros. According to the data of ELSTAT, it was recorded that the per capita income in the DMT province increased by 1.7 percent compared to the previous year. On the other hand, Kavala was the richest province with 14,202 euros per capita, while Xanthi was recorded as the poorest province among the 5 provinces with an income of 9,803 euros.

East Macedonia Thrace Region remained the second poorest state out of 13 regions in the country; the big differences remains between the states and drew big attention.
The Attiki region is in the leading position, recorded an increase of 2.2 percent compared to the previous year, and took the top spot with 17,092 euros per capita.
Gross Value Added across the country increased by 2% compared to 2018 and reached 158.762 billion euros.
Almost half, 47.7% of Gross Value Added, was generated in Attiki. Attiki is followed by Central Macedonia 13.7%, 5.1% Thessaly, 5% Crete, 4.7% Central Greece, 4.5% Peloponnese, 4.4% Western Greece, 3.8% It is followed by East Macedonia - Thrace with 3.5, and South Aegean with 3.5. It is followed by Epirus with 2.2%, Western Macedonia with 2.1%, Ionian Islands with 1.8% and the North Aegean with 1.4%.
In terms of sectors contributing to Gross Value Added, the largest share was made by the service-trade, transportation, tourism, accommodation and catering sectors with 43,219 billion euros (158,762 billion euros in total).
This is followed by the public administration and defense, education, health and care sectors with 31,683 billion euros.
Real estate management ranked third with a contribution of 25,804 billion euros. Processing, mining and quarrying, electricity and water supply, and waste management ranked fourth with 21.845 billion euros.
This is followed by professional, scientific, technical and administrative activities with 8.334 billion euro, finance and insurance activities with 7.673 billion, agriculture and fisheries with 6.926 billion, arts, entertainment and other services with 5.623 billion, information and communication with 5.077 billion euro and 2,579 billion euro. The construction industry is at the bottom of the list.
