Former president of the Xanthi Turkish Union and retired teacher Ramadan Duban passed away early on the morning of Saturday, September 14, 2024, at his home in Sünnetçiköy, Xanthi.
Western Thrace mourns the loss of Ramadan Duban

Born in June 1952 in Sulucadere, a village in the Karaoğlan Mountains of Xanthi, Duban completed his primary education at the Sünnetçiköy Turkish Minority Primary School. He later attended the Xanthi Minority Middle and High School before fulfilling his military service. In 1974, he enrolled in Istanbul University’s Faculty of Science, where he earned a degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1978.

Despite his qualifications, Duban was not appointed to minority schools in Xanthi or Komotini, but he remained active in the community. He served as president of the Xanthi Turkish Union and was involved in the Western Thrace Turkish Teachers’ Union and the DEB Party. Additionally, he was a columnist for GÜNDEM newspaper and authored several books, including works on poetry, short stories, and the traditional Quran recitation ceremonies held in local villages. At the time of his passing, he was working on a new book titled Xanthi Celebrities.

Ramadan Duban is survived by his wife, Mümine Duban, and their two sons, Doğan and Fatih. His funeral will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, following the noon prayer at the Sünnetçiköy Mosque.
