Train-truck collision near Sofulu; no serious injuries reported
Train 1681 collided with a truck at an unguarded level crossing near Sofulu (Soufli) at 10:20 on Tuesday, while conducting the Çirmen (Ormenio)-Dedeağaç (Alexandroupolis) service, Hellenic Train announced. None of the passengers or crew were injured in the collision.
According to the announcement, the train driver followed the proper procedures, activating the instant braking system and sounding the train horn, but was unable to avoid a collision with the truck that had entered the crossing.
Fire department and police forces responded to the incident, as well as an ambulance, but there was only material damage to the train. As a result of the collision, train 1681 was immobilised and the section of the line from Saltıköy (Lavara) to Dedeağaç (Alexandroupoli) was closed. Passengers of the train were taken to their destination by Hellenic Train buses.
The truck driver who attempted to cross the tracks, aged 49, was examined by doctors at Dimetoka (Didimoticho) General Hospital and does not appear to have sustained any serious injuries, barring some scrapes and bruises.
The 35-year-old train driver has been arrested by the police for causing bodily harm, with an investigation being conducted at Sofulu (Soufli) Police Station.
