Rodopi: Fire prevention measures remain in effect during winter
Although Greece’s official wildfire protection season ended on October 31, fire prevention measures will remain in force throughout the winter period in the Rodopi region, authorities announced on Sunday.
The Fire Service of Rodopi said the regulations continue to apply to forests, grasslands, farmlands, urban parks and groves, as well as plots of land near such areas. Citizens are urged to avoid any activity that could spark a fire, including:
lighting or maintaining open flames,
carrying out hot works or using equipment that produces sparks,
using fireworks or flares.
Fire Service patrols and inspections will continue, while violations of the regulations carry heavy administrative fines and possible criminal penalties.
The Rodopi Fire Service has called on residents to remain vigilant and to consult local fire authorities before carrying out outdoor activities, in order to confirm what actions are permitted and to receive guidance on fire safety measures.
In the event of smoke, flames, or any sign of fire, citizens are urged to immediately call 199 or 112, providing clear details on their location, the direction and intensity of the fire, local wind conditions, and the type of vegetation involved. They should also leave the area promptly and follow instructions from emergency authorities.
Authorities stressed that maintaining awareness and cooperation during the winter months remains critical to preventing wildfires, even outside the official fire season.
