Request for the creation of Northern Evros Regional Unit to be discussed in Orestiada and Didymoteicho Municipal Councils

They are asking the councils to issue resolutions supporting the creation of the new regional unit, which would be personally delivered to the Prime Minister.

The proposal is scheduled for discussion at the Orestiada Municipal Council meeting on September 24 and at the Didymoteicho Municipal Council on September 26. This move elevates the issue to the highest representative bodies of Northern Evros, underscoring its significance. Supporters of the proposal argue that the creation of a Northern Evros Regional Unit would help lift the area out of years of economic isolation and decline, while also fostering development.

Advocates emphasize that Northern Evros, which includes the municipalities of Orestiada and Didymoteicho, has distinct geographic and economic characteristics compared to Southern Evros. They argue that the region has sufficient population and resources to sustain itself as an independent administrative unit. Furthermore, they call for a correction of the administrative oversight from Law 3852/2010 (the "Kallikratis" law) to ensure that Northern Evros is placed in its rightful position within the country’s governance framework by 2025.

Key supporters of the proposal include the Bishop of Didymoteicho, Orestiada, and Soufli, Damaskinos, along with the President of the Orestiada Bar Association, the President of the Orestiada Commercial Association, and several other local officials and community leaders.

The proposal aims to rectify what proponents view as an irrational administrative division that has worsened the burden on both the state and the residents of Northern Evros, urging the government to act swiftly to address the issue.
