Western Thrace Turks living in Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece, have serious problems in performing their religious prayers and burying their bodies, as the Greek authorities do not allow mosques from the Ottoman period to be opened in the city and there is no Muslim cemetery.
Western Thrace Turks in Thessaloniki have been performing their prayers in the association's club since the masjid operating under the umbrella of the Macedonian-Thrace Muslims Education and Culture Association, which they founded in 2005, was closed in 2017 on the grounds that it was "unauthorized" by the prosecutor's office. Western Thrace Turks have to send their bodies to Western Thrace for burial because there is no Muslim cemetery in the city.
