President Sakellaropoulou visits Western Thrace
President Katerina Sakellaropoulou's visit to Western Thrace continues due to Easter week.

President Sakellaropoulou visited the villages of Büyük Derbent and Küçük Derbent in the province of Meriç (Evros) within the scope of her visit to Western Thrace due to the Easter week.

Sakellaropoulou, who visited Küçük Derbent village of Meriç province for the first time, on Friday morning, 22 April, was greeted by Sofulu Mayor Panagiotis Kalakikos and the people. President Sakellaropoulou, who had a short talk with the people, later attended the service in the church in the village.

Sakellaropoulou then moved on to the village of Büyük Derbent. Sakellaropulu was greeted by the appointed mufti Osman Hamza, who was appointed by the state as the mufti of Dimoteka, and the chairman of the board of trustees. It is reported that they presented a hand-woven Greek flag to Sakellaropoulou at the welcome.

Osman Hamza, the regent of the mufti, who was not accepted by the minority because of the arbitrary appointment of the state in violation of the Treaty of Lausanne and international law, said that Muslims and Christians live in peace in the region and repeated the state thesis that this is an example throughout the world.

Welcomed in front of the cemevi (Alawi temple) in the village by the director of the minority primary school Mümin Pireli, the President of the Culture and Education Association İbrahim Hayriye, and the women of the village, Sakellaropoulou said, “Everyone has the right to worship where they belong. Religion unites people”. The Director of the Turkish Minority School Mümin Pireli said, “We are very happy, we are grateful for the country we live in. In the past, we had to do our prayers (meaning Alawis) in secret in our homes. Then Greece gave us this right. Now we are doing our worship freely.”

The beautification of Greece, which was condemned by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for banning associations of the Turkish Minority with the word "Turkish" in its name, as if it were a country of freedom, caused questions in the public.

After visiting Evros, Sakellaropulu moved to Rhodope, where she first visited the village of Thrilorio. In the village where the Pontic immigrants live, the President was welcomed by the Mayor of Komotini, Giannis Gkaranis, the Rhodope YDP Deputy Evripidis Stilianidis, the SYRIZA Deputy Takis Charitou, the village headman Giorgos Apostolidis and the Head of the Cultural Association of the village Chrisa Mavridou. Sakellaropulu attended the mass held at the church in the village.
