ND lawmaker distorts the facts about Minority Education
New Democracy Deputy Angelos Syrigos continues to distort the facts regarding the education problem of Western Thrace Turkish community.

The final report prepared by the Non-Party Thrace Development Commission established in the Greek Parliament was discussed at the General Assembly of the Parliament on April 6, 2022.

Expressing his views on the report, Angelos Syrigos, Deputy Minister of Education and Religious Affairs in Charge of Higher Education and New Democracy Party (NDP) Member of Parliament, stated that the higher education level of the Muslim Minority in (Western) Thrace has increased from the past to the present, adding that thousands of Minority members study at Thrace Democritus University. He said that most of them were doctors, lawyers, and civil engineers.

“We are proud that these young people are successful and it is a result of the equality and equal rights working in our country. We proved in practice that Greece respects the rights of the minority in Thrace,” he tried to cover up the facts about the education problems of the Western Thrace Turks.

On the subject, Halit Habip Oglu, President of the European Western Thrace Turkish Federation (ABTTF), said, “Yes, in recent years, hundreds of young people from the Western Thrace Turkish community in our country, Greece, have started their careers after graduating from university. Deputy Minister Syrigos distorts the truth by saying that this is the result of the equality he claims is operating in our country. Because this success is only the success of our young people and their families. Because our young people have to take additional private lessons in primary and secondary education in order to be successful as a result of the state's continuous interventions in our educational autonomy for decades, reducing the quality of minority education. In addition, many of our young people who enter university drop out of their higher education due to the insufficient financial situation of their families. Therefore, no one should try to take part in the success of our youth for the sake of political profit.”
