Mustafçova (Myki) Municipal Council demanded the resignation or dismissal of the Director of İskeçe (Xanthi) Primary Education, who banned the use of gardens belonging to Turkish Minority Schools.

The Mustafçova Municipality Council of Xanthi province demanded the resignation or dismissal of the Xanthi Primary Education Director, who banned the use of gardens belonging to Turkish Minority Schools in villages during religious hatim events.

Mustafçova Municipal Council unanimously issued a statement on the subject. The aforementioned statement was also sent to the Ministry of Education, Prime Ministry Office, State Education Directorate, Xanthi Primary Education Directorate, Xanthi Prosecutor's Office, and Şahin Police Station.

In the statement; It was reminded that all primary schools within the borders of Mustafaçova Municipality are minority schools. In the statement, which stated that the majority of these schools were built on the foundation land of the villages, it was emphasized that the schools were managed by the council committees in accordance with the law.

In the published statement, it was noted that the decision on the use of minority schools was made by the council committees of the schools. In the statement accepted unanimously by the Mustafçova Municipal Council, it was reminded that the gardens of the minority schools were allocated to be used in the hatim ceremonies held in the villages in the region, and it was stated that there has been no problem in this regard so far and the Xanthi primary education directorate has not taken any action so far. In the statement, which noted that the Hatim ceremony has an important and sacred place in the religion of Islam, it was emphasized in the statement of the Xanthi Primary Education Directorate that the view that the "Hatim event does not have a cultural character" caused disappointment and reminded the "Islamophobic" discourses. In the statement, it was stated that Islam, like Christianity, teaches love between people and society. Stating that the Hatim ceremony has been celebrated with great participation and enthusiasm in Mustafçova municipality and our region for a long time, and it was organized by the parents of the children, the members of the municipal council stated that all the villagers also helped this organization. The declaration stated: “In the hatim ceremony, which the people of the region attach special importance to, traditional meat pilaf and ayran are served to the guests, and the school garden, which is often next to the mosque, is also used for this treat.”

In the declaration unanimously accepted by the members of the municipal council, after Efmorfia Stilianidou assumed the duty of Xanthi Primary Education Director, she warned the school principals mostly verbally in order not to allocate the school gardens to the parents of the students for the hatim ceremonies, and in some cases, she refused to give instructions in writing without referring to any law. In the statement of the Mustafçova Municipal Council, it was emphasized that such actions threaten the peace and harmony between Muslims and Christians in Thrace and incite discrimination among the people. In the statement, it was stated that citizens, on the one hand, saw the students and their families in the state schools in Xanthi overflowing, on the other hand, the people in the region were not allowed to use the minority schools for a cultural event once a year.

Mustafçova Municipal council members condemned the illegal actions of Xanthi Primary Education Principal Efmorfia Stilianidou and demanded her resignation or dismissal. It was noted that the declaration signed by all the city council members was also opened for the signature of the citizens in the region for support purposes.
