MP Zeybek calls for united progressive front against Mitsotakis Government

Hüseyin Zeybek, MP for İskeçe representing New Left, has called for unified cooperation among progressive opposition parties based on a concrete political program, arguing that public demand is clear: the current government must not be given another mandate.

In an interview with the Greek daily Avgi, Zeybek sharply criticized the administration of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, accusing it of implementing a neoliberal agenda that strengthens cartels and pushes society into what he described as “unprecedented economic suffocation.”

“Progressive Cooperation Is the Only Way”

Addressing the prospect of cooperation among left-wing parties, Zeybek argued that fragmented opposition benefits the ruling New Democracy party.

“Cooperation, partnerships, and consensus based on a specific political program are the only path forward for the entire progressive opposition,” Zeybek said. “I personally believe this is the public’s demand ahead of the next elections — to ensure that the Mitsotakis government and the interests it represents do not get another opportunity. This must be our red line.”

He further claimed that society is calling for the end of the current political and economic model.

Harsh Criticism Over Economy and Alleged Corruption

Zeybek accused the government of deepening economic hardship amid rising living costs and corruption allegations.

“The government has condemned society to unprecedented economic suffocation,” he said, referring to inflation and purchasing power erosion. He went on to describe Mitsotakis as “the conductor of the plunder on the backs of the Greek people.”

He also referenced past controversies, including wiretapping allegations and the ongoing debate surrounding the agricultural payments authority OPEKEPE, which has faced scrutiny in recent years.

Opposition to Troop Deployment to Gaza

Zeybek voiced strong opposition to Greece’s reported decision to participate in an international stabilization force in Gaza, arguing that such military commitments lack sufficient democratic oversight and parliamentary legitimacy.

He called for the decision to be reversed, claiming the move risks aligning Greece with Israeli military policies. Zeybek emphasized solidarity with the Palestinian people.

OPEKEPE Investigation and Cover-Up Allegations

Referring to the ongoing investigation by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office covering the 2019–2024 period, Zeybek described the OPEKEPE case as one of the government’s most serious scandals.

He alleged that a parliamentary inquiry committee was “rushed to closure in order to cover up the scandal,” adding that his party would present a detailed report outlining responsibilities and new findings in the near future.

Farmers’ Protests Among Largest in 30 Years

Zeybek also addressed the recent wave of farmer and livestock breeder protests, calling them among the largest agricultural mobilizations in the past three decades.

He accused the government of failing to respond to key demands such as reducing production costs and supporting small- and medium-scale farmers. Zeybek stressed the urgent need to lower energy and fuel costs, strengthen market oversight, and adopt targeted measures to protect the livestock sector.

As political tensions mount ahead of future elections, calls for opposition unity appear likely to intensify within Greece’s fragmented left-wing landscape.
